10th Anniversary Celebrations 23rd October 2018

Carterton U3A celebrated the 10th Anniversary of its founding in October 2018. In that time it has developed into a busy, vibrant U3A, which is growing rapidly.

It was decided to mark this milestone with a celebratory lunch and entertainment on the designated meeting day.

At 12 30 on the fourth Tuesday in October, the doors opened to a vastly changed hall. It had undergone a transformation and was now boasting, instead of rows of chairs, tables dressed in white cloths: garden flowers were gracing them, and the U3A colours of gold and dark blue were in evidence everywhere.

Taking their ‘welcome’ bucks fizz drinks in with them, 150+ people took their seats.

The buffet was very temptingly arranged and looked delicious, and a  magnificent cake (U3A colours again!)  sat in its own place of honour.

The lunch progressed well and thanks to careful planning, everyone was able to find something to their liking to take back to their chosen seat and enjoy.

After lunch we were entertained by a group called ‘The Sisters’ of Swing’ who specialise in songs from the 1940s/50s era. Many of our members  seemed to know all the words !

Our invited guest was Pam Jones. Pam had been very involved with the initial setting up of our U3A ten years earlier, and was delighted to be invited back.  Pam gave a short speech, as did the first three Chairmen.  The cake was ceremoniously cut and photographs marking this were taken.

The members  present were then served with a glass  of something bubbly ,and a slice of cake.

Glasses were raised in a toast to the next ten years, and then a beautiful new Banner, marking the first ten years was unveiled.

Each interest group had been visually represented on the banner, several different groups and members had been involved in its design and in the making of it. It will be a lasting memory of our first ten years.

It was a lovely way to celebrate our U3A, which began in 2008 with approx 100 members and now, in 2018 has 270+ ?? Terri
