Wow what a day to choose for an outing, the hottest day of the year so far. Hats, sun cream and sunglasses all at the ready.
Our coach was early and so we were able to depart from The Beehive on time. The journey was comfortable and without any hold ups we arrived early. This gave us time to stretch our legs, use the facilities and stroke our Horse “Drummer” who shares the job of pulling the boat on alternate days with Monty, both cross Shire horses.
Our boat was painted in the traditional rose and castle style which is an important part of England’s heritage. We floated on the canal for approx 45 mins until we came to a lock. Here we had the choice of staying on the boat whilst it went through the lock or get off and watch from a bridge. Once the boat had been taken through the lock and turned round, we had the opportunity to get back on while the lock filled.
Surprisingly there was not much wildlife, just a few birds and ducks. One or two boats passed us by.
After our boat trip we travelled into Newbury to have lunch and shopping, which was mainly ice creams.
Our journey home was again without holds.
It was a peaceful and relaxing day, even though we the temperature was high.
